To
begin with things past, in December, we had a very successful Art Trip
to the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) and beyond. Grade 9-12
participated, and in addition to seeing the popular King Tut Egyptian
artifacts exhibit, we viewed some beautiful pieces by Alexander
Calder—wire sculptures just like the contour drawings we do in class,
along with the first Kinetic Art of its kind—moveable circus figurines
made of scraps. One group went off to see a warehouse studio
near
Queen Street--live artists making a living doing art. Lots of
other amazing things, but these were the highlights.
In
November, Art media students also attended the Waterloo International
Film Festival in its second year running, and learned lots about
Animation. These experiences invigorate ourselves and our
students, giving them lots of new ideas and excitement about creating,
as well as a sense of the timeline of Art History.
The
other big thing in the works is our ArtSmart motivated Outdoor
Sculpture project. It is a collaborative cross-discipline
project, that hopes to achieve a large hull of a Viking Ship appear to
be coming out of the front lawn. Stay tuned: its
ambitious
in a Renaissance kind of way, its creative, messy, inspiring, and
interconnected, and we hope our students will have a great
experience. One that will be a lasting part of WCI
History!
Thanks to Kyle Bishop, Katie McKinnon, for the concept and grant
writing.
Stay tuned
for the Expressions (KWAG) submissions, and for the City Hall
Photography show that Mr Bishop’s and Ms Jackson’s classes will be
participating in during the Spring.
And
finally, the Arts Council and all the participants have to be
congratulated for instigating an impromptu Art-a-thon for
Haiti.
We raised around $300.00 toward our school effort and entertained
students in the cafeteria at the same time. People played
music,
sold portrait drawing, bracelets, and opportunities to stencil on a
mural, and Natalie Pavlik performed a beautiful lino print
project. With help and on her own, she printed as many images
of
a Haitian child as a student with two classes that day could, then
posted the ratio: 1 print = 1000 Haitian Earthquake victims.
Bravo—what a thought-provoking group you are!
