Waterloo Collegiate Institute offers Latin as a part of its Classical and International Languages programme.

As an ancient language, the Latin programme emphasizes the following strands: vocabulary and derivatives, grammar, translation and culture in the form of social history. Students will not only learn Latin vocabulary, but also see what English words are derived from those roots. Students will study grammatical constructions and compare them with English and other languages. The purpose of translating Latin is for students to not only understand how the vocabulary and grammar works together to communicate an idea, but also to learn from the ancient text about Roman Life and Roman History. Finally, students will look at Roman social history and how many aspects of ancient Roman Life are still present in today’s society.

Course Outlines for Latin courses:

Grade 10 Beginning Latin LVL BDI

Grade 11 Intermediate Latin LVL BUI

Grade 12 Senior Latin LVL CUI
